Tall Tree inside a Cave

I planted a sapling on a small patch of dirt inside on of my caves in my single player survival world and returned to find that it had grown to surprising heights. I don’t know exactly how the tree-growing algorithm works- I’ve seen some things on Youtube about putting dirt rings above your sapling- but I haven’t done anything special to achieve this.
